How to use a large storage jar in the kitchen
A large storage jar is the one you reach for when you need a permanent home for an entire bag of dry goods. Instead of having a half-open bag of flour squeezed behind your canned goods, pour it into a spacious jar where you can see exactly how much is left. This applies to flour, sugar, pasta, rice, grains, oatmeal, muesli, coffee beans, dog treats, and dry cookies that would otherwise go soft in the bag.
Our large jars start at 1500 ml and up. The square storage jars are available in 1800 ml and 2000 ml, and the 1500 ml round storage jar with a light wood lid takes care of the round bags. What you gain is an overview: you no longer stand in the supermarket wondering whether you have enough flour at home, because you can see your stock immediately the next time you open the cupboard. You are not the only one who has lost track in a drawer full of half-open bags.
How much do 1800 ml and 2000 ml hold?
The short answer: a standard one-kilo bag of flour or sugar fits perfectly into the large jars. A 2000 ml jar holds two liters, and an 1800 ml jar holds 1.8 liters. Because flour and sugar weigh and pack differently, there is no fixed number of grams, but these two largest jars were chosen specifically to swallow an entire standard bag without you having to leave any leftovers aside.
Use the smallest of the large jars for items you don't use as much of at once, and save the 2000 ml size for flour, sugar, and pasta, which often come in large quantities. If you want a smaller size for spices or nuts, we have a wider selection of storage jars, so you can build a series of varying heights to suit your specific cupboard.
The wood lid and what it means for airtightness
The jars have wood lids, and under each lid is a silicone ring that creates an airtight seal around the edge. This ring keeps out air and moisture so that your flour doesn't clump and your muesli doesn't go soft. The sealed edge also makes it harder for flour moths and other pests to access your dry goods, should they ever appear in a kitchen cupboard.
The lid is available in two shades. The light wood provides a calm, Scandinavian look, while acacia wood is darker and more vibrant in its grain. You can choose within each style: see the light versions in square storage jars with light wood lids and the dark versions in square storage jars with acacia wood lids. Because wood is a natural material, you will notice small differences from jar to jar in color and grain. This is not a defect; it is exactly what ensures they don't look mass-produced.
How to clean the glass and wood lid
The glass itself is easy to keep clean, and because it is clear, you can see right away when it needs a wash. You should treat the wood lids more gently than the glass, however. Natural wood and silicone rings do not handle the high temperatures and long soaking times of a dishwasher well, so wipe the lid with a damp cloth and let it dry completely before putting it back on. If you put a damp lid on a full jar, you risk sealing in moisture, which defeats the whole purpose of the airtight seal.
A good time to clean is when the jar is empty, just before you fill it with a new bag. That way, you avoid pouring new flour on top of old remnants that have been sitting for a long time.
Square or round jars
The shape determines how well the jars utilize space. Square jars sit side-by-side with no air between them, allowing you to fit more jars on the same shelf, and they create a neat, calm line when standing in a row. The round ones have a softer look and look great on a countertop or an open shelf, but they leave small gaps when placed closely together.
If you want to fill an entire cupboard with dry goods, the square jars are the most space-efficient route, and you can find the entire selection under square storage jars. If the jar is to be visible as a single focal point, a round one can easily justify its place. Many people mix the two, letting the choice of shape depend on whether the jar is tucked away or out in the open.
Build a uniform series rather than individual jars
A single large jar solves one problem. A series in the same style solves the whole cupboard. When flour, sugar, grains, and pasta are in jars with the same lids and the same clear glass, the cupboard gains a uniform look, making it appear tidy even when you are busy. It’s not just about the look: a fixed system, where every dry good has its own jar and its own place, makes everyday life easier because you know exactly where everything is.
If you want to get started quickly, you can gather everything at once with one of our storage jar package deals, where several sizes are included. And if the jars need to be labeled so you can tell oatmeal from rye flour at a glance, you will find it in labels. If you are unsure where to start, many find it helpful to read our guide storage jars for dry goods - see the selection and create order first.
Spare parts if the lid wears out before the jar
A jar lasts a long time, but a wood lid with a silicone ring is the part that gets used the most, as it is opened and closed every day. If the lid should one day become worn, or if you drop a jar while the lid is still intact, you don't need to throw away the whole set. For the 1800 ml square jars, you can buy the glass alone as a "1800 ml square storage jar spare part without lid" and reuse the lid you have. It’s a small thing, but it means the system can last for many years without you having to start from scratch.
