Why large jars are the easy way to keep track of dry goods

Do you also have flour in the bag, grains in an old bucket, and rice in a half-open package that topples over every time you open the cupboard? You are not the only one. Most of us accumulate dry goods over time, and it's easy to lose track of what you actually have at home.

Large storage jars solve exactly that problem. With a capacity of one and a half to two liters, you can pour a whole bag of flour, rice, or pasta directly into the jar and place it where you can see it. You can read the quantity through the glass, so you know when it’s running low, and you avoid open bags that spill and take up space. The largest jars in this collection hold up to 2000 ml, which corresponds to a standard bag of flour with plenty of room to spare.

The whole point is that you achieve both organization and a tidy kitchen in one go. Clear glass showcases the contents, and a uniform look on the shelf provides the calm that a messy cupboard takes away from you. If you want to see the entire range, you can find it under storage jars.

Square or round

The shape determines how well the jars utilize space. Square jars stand close together without air in between, and that makes a noticeable difference in a narrow cupboard or on a shelf where every centimeter counts. If you need to have several jars standing next to each other with the same height and width, the square ones provide the most cohesive and calm expression. See the selection under square storage jars.

The round jars have a softer look and are nice to have out on the kitchen counter. They are slightly easier to clean inside because there are no corners where flour and grains can get stuck. In this collection, the round jar is available in 1500 ml, while the square ones are available in both 1800 and 2000 ml.

There is no single right answer. If the jars are to stand close together in a cupboard, that points toward the square ones. If they are to stand out as part of the decor, you can safely choose based on what you find most attractive.

Light or dark wooden lid

The lid is what you see first, and therefore what ties the jars together with the rest of the kitchen. The jars are available with two types of wooden lids: a light lid and a darker lid in acacia wood.

The light lid fits well with light kitchens, white countertops, and a calm, Nordic style. The dark acacia lid has more warmth and character in the wood grain and suits darker or more rustic kitchens. Acacia is a hard wood with distinct, lively graining, so no two lids look exactly the same.

The important thing is that you choose the same lid type throughout. It is the uniformity that creates the calm, aesthetic look on the shelf, regardless of whether you settle on light or dark. If you want to see the dark wood collection, you will find it under storage jars with acacia wooden lid, and the light one under storage jars with light wooden lid.

How the wooden lid keeps dry goods fresh

One of the most frequently asked questions is whether the jars seal tightly. They do. The wooden lids have a silicone ring on the inside that fits snugly against the glass rim when you put the lid on. It keeps moisture and air out, and it is precisely the air and moisture that otherwise make flour clumpy and cause biscuits and crispbread to lose their crunch.

The tight closure means that the jars are well-suited for all the dry goods you want to keep fresh: flour, sugar, rice, pasta, grains, oatmeal, nuts, and coffee beans. You can read more about what is suitable for the jars in the guide storage jars for dry goods.

A small thing to keep in mind: because the lid is made of wood and has a silicone ring, it does not belong in the dishwasher. The glass itself is dishwasher safe, but the wood lasts longest if you wipe it by hand with a damp cloth and let it dry. In this way, the wood retains its color, and the silicone ring continues to seal tightly.

How to choose the right size

The size should match what you are filling them with and how much you use. For large, staple dry goods like flour and rice, 1800 or 2000 ml is the obvious choice because a whole bag goes in at once, without you having leftovers in the bag afterward. The 1500 ml round jar fits nicely for pasta, grains, or oatmeal, which don't take up quite as much space.

A good piece of advice is to base it on the bags you typically buy. If you usually buy kilo packs of flour and sugar, go for the largest jars. If it is more mixed dry goods in smaller quantities, you can vary the sizes so that each jar matches its contents.

If you need smaller jars for spices or small portions, they belong to another part of the assortment. You can get organized with spices under spice jars, while smaller storage pots are found under small storage pots.

Get started quickly with a bundle solution

If you need to organize an entire kitchen cupboard at once, it makes sense to start with several jars from the beginning so you get that uniform look immediately. This is often where the effect is most noticeable: when the entire shelf has the same jars and the same lids, the cupboard settles into a sense of calm in a completely different way than when you add one jar at a time.

You don't have to overhaul the whole kitchen at once. Start with the cupboard that is the messiest; often, that is the dry goods cupboard. If you want to put together a solution, you can find the pre-made sets under storage jar bundle solutions. You can read more about how to put them together in the guide storage jar bundle solution.

Apply labels and complete the system

Once the jars are filled, it is the labels that make the system easy to live with in everyday life. With a label on each jar, you and the rest of the household know immediately what is what and where it should be put back. It is the little detail that makes the system last, instead of falling apart again after a couple of weeks.

You can find labels that fit the jars under labels. If you want to change the contents, you can also buy a jar without a lid as a spare part if a single lid should be lost over time, so you don't need to replace the entire jar.
