How to get an overview of your dry goods with glass jars

Do you also have flour in one bag, pasta in another, and grains in a third, all toppling over each other on the shelf? You are not alone. Dry goods are where you lose track most quickly because they come home in bags and boxes of all sorts of sizes and shapes. The solution is to pour everything into matching glass jars with lids, so you can see the contents, line the jars up, and find what you need immediately.

A storage jar for the kitchen is a clear glass jar with a tight-fitting lid that you fill with flour, pasta, rice, grains, sugar, nuts, coffee, or other dry goods. Because the jar is transparent, you can immediately see how much is left, and you don't need to open five containers to find the oatmeal. At the same time, the cupboard gets a calm, uniform look when the contents are stored in the same type of glass instead of in bags with different colors and logos. If you want to read more about how to get started, we have compiled advice in our guide to storage jars.

Square or round jars

These jars are available in both square and round shapes, and the choice is mostly about where they will be placed. The square storage jars utilize space best because they can stand edge to edge without gaps. If you have a shelf or a cupboard where every centimeter counts, the square ones give you the most jars in the least space and the most uniform, calm look.

The round jars have a softer expression and are nice to display on the kitchen counter or on an open shelf where they can be seen. If you want to put together a complete system, you can advantageously mix both: square for the dry goods you have a lot of and store in the cupboard, and round for the things you use daily and would like to have out on display. Common to both is the wooden lid, which gives the jars a natural, tranquil expression that fits into most kitchens.

Light or dark acacia wood on the lid

The jars have wooden lids in two shades so you can match your particular kitchen. The light lid is a light wood that provides a bright and Scandinavian tone, while the dark lids are made of acacia wood, which is a hardwood with a warm, dark grain. Acacia is known for being durable and resistant to moisture, which makes it a good material for a kitchen.

The decision is purely aesthetic. If you have light cabinets and countertops, the light lid complements the kitchen with calm and lightness, while the dark acacia lid provides more contrast and warmth if your kitchen is kept in darker tones or already features a lot of wood. If you want to see the dark version, you can find them under storage jars with acacia wood lids, and the light ones under storage jars with light wooden lids, square. Regardless of what you choose, you get the same calm, uniform look when the jars stand side by side.

How to choose the size for flour, pasta, and grains

These jars are available from 400 ml up to 2000 ml, and it is a good idea to think about how much you actually use of each item before you choose. A rule of thumb: an ordinary bag of flour or sugar of about one kilo takes up about 1500 to 1800 ml, so for flour, sugar, and pasta, you hit the mark with the large jars. For that purpose, the Storage jar with acacia wooden lid, square, 1800 ml or the corresponding Storage jar with light wooden lid, square, 1800 ml work well, and if you have extra of an item, the jars are also available in 2000 ml.

The medium jars of 1000 ml are suitable for rice, grains, oatmeal, and lentils, where you typically have a little less on hand at a time. The small jars of 400 to 500 ml are perfect for items you use in smaller quantities: nuts, seeds, baking powder, dried fruit, or coffee. A good tip is to measure by pouring a bag into a jar you already have so you can see if it fits. If you would rather get everything in one purchase, take a look at our storage jar package solutions, where the sizes have been put together in advance.

How the wooden lid keeps food fresh

The lid fits tightly on the jar, keeping air and moisture out, and that is precisely what keeps your dry goods fresh for longer. Flour won't clump, grains won't get soft, and coffee will retain its aroma. At the same time, you avoid what many people experience with open bags: that a bag of rice or oatmeal attracts the small moths that can spread in the kitchen cupboard. A sealed jar makes it difficult for them to get to it.

A small piece of advice: wooden lids and wood in general should not be soaked or put in the dishwasher, as the wood can be damaged by prolonged contact with water and heat. Wipe the lid with a damp cloth, and let the jar itself take a turn in the dishwasher if you want it thoroughly clean. That way, both the glass and the lid will last for many years.

How to create a uniform system in the kitchen

You will notice the biggest difference when the jars are gathered together. Instead of a jumble of bags, twist ties, and half-open boxes, you get a shelf where everything stands at the same height, in the same material, and with the same calm expression. It's not just nice to look at, it also makes everyday life easier: you find things faster, you can see when something is running low, and you avoid buying duplicates because you can see what you have.

If you want to make the system complete, you can put labels on the jars so you can tell the difference between wheat flour and rye flour or fine and coarse salt at a glance. If you have spices stored in bulk, they belong better in our spice jars, which are made in a smaller format for that specific purpose. You don't have to do it all at once. Start with one cupboard or one shelf, and build the system from there. We promise it's worth it once the overview is created, and if you have any questions along the way, we are ready to help.
