How glass jars with airtight lids keep food fresh
Have you ever opened a bag of flour that had been left half-open in the cupboard, only to find it clumpy or with a faint suspicion that something had been living in it? You’re not the only one. Most dry goods lose quality when left in their original packaging because air and moisture get in, and because the bag can rarely be closed completely.
A food storage jar solves exactly that. The lid seals tightly around the rim, keeping out air and moisture so the food retains its flavor and texture for longer. Glass is also one of the most neutral materials you can store food in: it absorbs neither taste nor odor from what you put inside, and it doesn’t impart anything to the food. That is why a bag of coffee tastes like coffee and not like plastic once it has been stored in glass.
The jars here have wooden lids with a seal that closes around the edge of the glass. It is this seal that makes the difference between a jar you use for decoration and a jar where you can actually store flour, grains, and coffee without the food going bad prematurely.
Square or round jars
The shape determines how much you get out of your shelf space. The square storage jars stand edge-to-edge with no wasted space in between, and these are the ones to choose when you want a whole row of jars to look uniform on a shelf or in a cupboard. They provide that calm, tidy look where everything is aligned.
The round jars take up a bit more width but are easier to reach into with a spoon or a cup, and they are nice to keep out on the counter. If you want to explore the selection of both types, you can find them gathered under storage jars with lids.
Most people end up with a mix: square ones for the staple dry goods that need to stand in a row in the cupboard, and a few round ones for the items that are used daily and look good left out.
Light wooden lid or dark acacia lid
The jars are available with two types of wooden lids, and the difference is purely aesthetic. The light wooden lid gives a soft, Nordic look that suits light-colored kitchens and white fixtures. The acacia lid is darker and warmer in tone, with distinct wood grain, which complements darker kitchens and wooden countertops.
Both work the same way: the lid seals tightly around the glass and keeps the food fresh. Choose based on what suits your kitchen, not functionality. If you want everything to be aligned, the point is simply to choose the same type of lid throughout. It is that uniformity that creates calm on the shelf, regardless of whether you go for light or dark.
If you need to build an entire collection at once, storage jar bundle sets are the easy way: you get multiple jars in the same style without having to put them together individually.
How to choose the size for flour, pasta, coffee, and grains
The jars here range from 400 ml to 2000 ml, and it makes good sense to think about what will be inside before choosing.
The largest ones, 1800 ml and 2000 ml, are suitable for things you use a lot of and often buy in large bags: flour, sugar, oatmeal, pasta, and rice. A standard one-kilo bag of flour fits perfectly in a jar of that size.
The medium size of 1000 ml is the most versatile and good for coffee, rice, lentils, nuts, and most grains. The smallest ones, 500 ml and the 400 ml round jar, are for things you use less of: baking powder, seeds, dried fruit, bouillon cubes, or a small portion of nuts.
A good tip is to pour a couple of the dry goods you buy most often into a measuring jug first so you can see how many milliliters they occupy. That way, you get the size right the first time instead of ending up with a jar that is too small for the bag.
Are the jars dishwasher, freezer, and microwave safe?
The glass itself can withstand a trip through the dishwasher. The wooden lid, however, must be washed by hand and wiped off, just like any other wooden kitchenware: wood and dishwashers are not good friends in the long run because the high heat and long water bath dry out the wood and can cause it to crack. Wipe the lid with a damp cloth and let it dry before putting it back on.
If you want to use the jars in the freezer, remember that glass should not be filled to the brim with anything liquid, as the contents expand when they freeze. For leftovers and cooking that need to go in the fridge, freezer, or microwave, it is often easier to reach for glass food storage containers, which are designed specifically for that use. The storage jars here are primarily created for dry goods in cupboards and on shelves.
Why glass is a plastic-free choice in the kitchen
Glass is one of the few materials you can use again and again without it wearing out or losing quality. It doesn’t scratch like plastic, it doesn’t become cloudy over time, and it keeps color and taste completely neutral, no matter how many times you refill it.
For many, this is the very reason to switch from bags and plastic tubs: you get rid of single-use packaging for dry goods, and you get a container that can last for many years. The lid is made of wood, a natural material that fits into the idea of a kitchen with less plastic and more durable items. If a lid should ever be lost, you can buy the glass without a lid as a spare part, so you don't have to discard an entire jar.
Label them
When flour, sugar, and baking powder are in identical jars, they can look alike on a busy morning. A set of labels solves this in an instant and also provides that finished, uniform look where all jars have the same font instead of varying bags and packages.
It is also labels that turn the jars into a real system rather than just pretty storage. You can see at a glance what is running low, and you don’t need to open the lid to check what is inside. For those who use many spices alongside their dry goods, we offer spice jars & accessories in the same style, so the whole kitchen feels cohesive.
