These jars and how they can be used for baby food

Homemade baby food quickly fills up the entire fridge: a portion of carrot puree here, a bit of potato-broccoli there, and some leftover banana porridge you're not quite sure how old it is. You are not the only one losing track. The jars in this collection are square and round storage jars made of clear glass with tight-fitting wooden lids, and they are well-suited for this exact task because you can see the contents through the glass, place them side-by-side without wasting space, and apply a label with the date.

The most important thing to know first: the jar itself is regular glass, which you can freely use in the fridge, freezer, microwave, and dishwasher. The wooden lid, however, must be treated with a bit more care, and we will return to that further down. For baby food, this means you can safely portion out a larger batch of puree, freeze it, and later thaw and heat it, as long as you take the lid off first.

Glass is also a clean material without plastic that can leach substances into food, which is one of the reasons why many choose glass over plastic containers when it comes to the little ones. If you would prefer plastic containers with tight lids for the freezer, we also have food storage containers.

How to choose the size for a baby portion

A baby who has just started on solids typically eats very little at a time, and the portion grows as the child gets older. Therefore, the size is what you should consider first.

The smallest jars here are 500 ml in the square model and 400 ml in the round one. They hold more than a single small meal portion, so in practice, you rarely fill them all the way up for a baby. On the other hand, they are easy to grab, and you can use them for two portions at a time or to have a daily ration ready.

If you are making a larger batch of puree and freezing it in bulk, the large 1000 ml, 1800 ml, and 2000 ml jars make good sense if you would rather thaw a larger portion and distribute it. A practical system is to use the small jars for what will be eaten within a few days, and the large ones for what you are freezing. If you want to get started quickly with a complete set, the jars are also available as storage jar bundles.

Freezer, microwave, and dishwasher

The question most people ask when it comes to baby food is what the jars can actually withstand. Here, it is important to distinguish between the glass and the wooden lid.

The glass itself can go in the freezer, microwave, and dishwasher. When freezing, do not fill all the way to the rim, as food with high water content expands when it freezes, and the glass needs space for it. Leave a couple of centimeters free at the top. If you want to thaw the baby food and heat it in the microwave, always remove the wooden lid first: wood does not belong in the microwave, and a tight lid can also build up pressure when the food is heated.

You should wash the wooden lid by hand and leave it to dry instead of putting it through the dishwasher, where heat and water wear down the wood over time. If a lid breaks, or if you want an extra one, you can buy the jars as a spare part without a lid, so you do not have to discard an entire jar.

Square or round jars

The shape matters more than you might think when the jars need to stand close together in a fridge or freezer where space is often tight with a little one in the house. The square jars stand edge-to-edge and fully utilize the shelf, and they are easy to line up so you can read the label on each one. The round jars take up a little more space between them, but in return, they are extra easy to stir and scrape clean. If you want to see the entire selection of the square type, you can find them gathered under square storage jars. For baby food, where you typically have many small portions standing next to each other, the square ones usually win on space.

Add date and content with labels

Homemade baby food quickly looks the same when it's frozen: a yellow lump can be both carrot and squash, and you can't tell when you made it by looking at a frozen jar. Therefore, a label with contents and date is what really gives you the overview back. You avoid guessing, and you ensure that the oldest items are eaten first, so you avoid food waste. We have self-adhesive labels that fit the jars and give the drawers and shelves a uniform look. As soon as the system is in place, you only spend a few seconds finding the right portion, and that is the whole point: overview and peace of mind in a daily life where there is already plenty to keep track of.

The jars can continue to be used when the baby food phase is over

One of the nice things about choosing glass over single-use containers is that they don't become redundant the day your child starts eating with you at the table. The same jars move naturally to the rest of the kitchen. You can use the small ones for nuts, raisins, and snacks, and the large ones for flour, oatmeal, pasta, and rice. These are, in fact, the same jars you will find in our regular selection of storage jars for dry goods and the kitchen. In this way, it is not an investment you will only enjoy for half a year, but storage that continues to be useful and create calm and order on the shelves long after the puree period is over.
